INTERNS

Solidbase Laboratory has a proactive outlook towards internships. Every year we host both local and foreign interns for varying time periods. Our only prerequisite is that non-Maltese speaking students have a high intermediate level of English (CEFR B2), and a willingness to learn from our experience, accept direction, and to disseminate knowledge! Send us an email and let us know your background and when you are available and we will get in touch with you to organise an interview.

Solidbase Laboratory is an accredited testing house that carries out inspection of building and construction materials and their raw components. We employ over 60 personnel. Since many of our employees are not Maltese, the unofficial spoken language is English. Interns will benefit from exposure to this and will help them improve their grasp of the language. They will be exposed to quality processes and will be given the opportunity to provide input.

We understand that the purpose of an internship is to assist students to integrate in the working world and the day-to-day activities in the job environment. At Solidbase they will be given the opportunity to do just so. Not only do we provide the basis for this, but we listen to what interns have to say and will implement their suggestions if found to be conducive to improvement.

Depending on their age, maturity, and capabilities, interns will be given training and assignments in: laboratory processes; carrying out quality audits in various aspects of the business including two laboratories, offices, and site works; accompany a quality inspector on site; internal calibrations on laboratory equipment; carrying out laboratory tests; and related work.

Monitoring and mentoring is generally be provided by the quality office which is manned by 3 employees, as well as the Managing Director. Discussions / training / assignments will be carried out face-to-face.

Evaluations will be based on the intern’s performance, willingness to accept direction and his follow through, his general behaviour and interactions with staff, and his proactiveness.

What some of our former interns say

"For me working at Solidbase was a really good opportunity to discover the construction sector, the Maltese work culture, and to learn about the different types of Maltese construction. I visited a lot of different construction sites with different Solidbase inspectors, I worked with almost all the employees and I witnesses the bulk of the tasks that Solidbase handles. Due to the family atmosphere, this internship was really interesting and I have a lot of good memories from this experiences."—Gabriel D., ICAM Lille, France, 2019

"It was a pleasure to join Solidbase for 6 months. This internship allowed me to discover the field of materials in construction and to really help me improve my English. Employees are kindly and they repeat instructions if necessary. They are from several countries, it's very interesting to discover each of them.
Work abroad was a very good experience for me. I wish all the best for Solidbase in the future!" — Roxane. D., ESSYM, France, – 2019

"The first day was very good, the staff who guided me were very welcoming and nice. The tour of the building was very detailed and enjoyable. After the tour, we were taken to a number of construction sites to see the work. The next day we spent time in the office. On the third day we were taken to visit more construction sites, where we saw a piler in action. The rest of the days were spent in the lab testing concrete cubes and tarmac samples which was the most interesting part. The experience was great overall and I wish to return in the near future!"—14 year old Natanael F., Maria Regina College Lilly of the Valley Secondary School Mosta, Malta, 2019
